I've been selling science fiction, fantasy, and horror stories professionally since 1988. This page is about fiction that's currently on sale and fiction I've sold that will be published in the near future.  Click here for a complete list of my sales to professional publications plus my early small-press sales.

"Black Magic"
Sword & Sorceress 23
published November 2008

This story is about a young woman's wanderlust and how she discovers unexpected things about herself.  To escape a very comfortable but boring life in 18th-century London, she runs away from home, disguises herself as a boy, and gets a job on an East India merchant ship.  She runs into more adventure than she bargained for when her ship stumbles upon a ghost ship adrift in the ocean, and her captain insists that she join the party that boards it to search for abandoned treasure.  Sword & Sorceress 23 is now on sale.

"The Death Detective"
Hardboiled Horror
to be published ...

UPDATE:  The publication of this anthology has been delayed.  As far as I know, it's still in the works.  To the best of my knowledge, there's no target date for publication right now.
This is my sweet and lighthearted horror story about the perils of living a life without passion.  What if it were a literal crime to have no true and real love in life, whether it's romantic love, love of humanity, doing the work you love, or just the love of life itself?  Hardboiled Horror is an anthology that blends detective fiction with horror -- look for it in 2008.

"Cenove's Choice" -- Magewarfare.com

(online now -- click here then click on "Golden City: Cenove's Choice" to read the story)

This novella is published online.  It's free for anyone to read -- there's no charge.  Use the Page Up, Page Down, or the arrow keys to navigate.  The URL is http://magewarfare.com/stories/StoryLoader-03.html.

I wrote "Cenove's Choice" with Kevin Barrett, an award-winning playwright who is one of the owners of the new collectable card game, Mage Warfare, that is currently on sale.

The story takes place in one of the game's many realms:  The Golden City.  Cenove (shown here) is the king's Firstborn -- the next in line for the throne.  He's caught among conflict within the royal family and rising tensions between the king and the workers who built the city.  When things get out of hand, Cenove must choose between his loyalty to his family and his love for a woman who is one of the many workers who built the Golden City.

His mother, Queen Daji (shown here), doesn't come on stage until well into the story, but she plays a significant role.  The images of Cenove and Queen Daji are cards in the game, illustrated by artist Tim Goernert.

You can buy the game on eBay and online at http://www.beckett.com/store/atozsc/.
